Wilderness Fun For The Whole Family

Want to explore the great Canadian wilderness but don't know how to do it with your kids? Come out to Elk Lakes with the experts in trekking and develop the skills and confidence to lead your own family adventures and fully explore the area we spend our lives in. This camp is designed for families with kids around 6-12, if you have any questions about your suitability for this camp please give us a email!

Open to all this camp does not require previous backpacking experience. Get to meet other families who share similar interests, and learn about how to manage animals hazards, Leave no trace principles and so much more.

Day by Day Adventure Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Meet at the trailhead for Elk Lake, Hike In. Enjoy the sights and prepare dinner.
  • Day 2: Pack up the hut and prepare to hike back out.

Introductory

This program is designed for people who want to experience a stay in an ACC backcountry hut with their children (6+). No previous backpacking experience required.  

Food, Accommodation and Guiding

Food

To keep the cost of this course as low as possible for participants, food will not be provided as part of the course. Please bring 2 lunches 1 breakfast and 1 dinner as well as your favorite snacks!

Accommodation

Elk Lakes Cabin provides a scenic and cozy base for hiking.  Accessing many trails in the area, Elk lakes is one of the ACC's most family friendly huts. With the approach from Peter Lougheed Park taking most parties 3-4 hours to complete. 

Guiding

Our guiding ratio will be a maximum of 8:1 to give you plenty of one-to-one learning time with our excellent guide. This camp is guided by ACMG-certified hiking guides.

The ACC hires guides certified by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG). Visit the ACMG website to learn more about what they do!

Rentals

If you don't have everything on the gear list and aren't ready to invest in your own, there are many awesome local businesses that rent out all of the equipment you will need.  Be sure to reserve your rentals ahead of time to make sure everything you need is available for you when you need it.

Hiking Hazards

  • Terrain
    • Cornices
    • Crevasses
    • Trees, tree wells, and tree stumps
    • Creeks
    • Rocks and Boulders
    • Variable and difficult walking terrain
    • Impact or collision with other persons or objects
    • Encounters with domestic or wild animals
    • Contact with poisonous flora or fauna
    • Loss of balance or control
    • Slips, trips, and falls
      • Hazard Mitigation
    • Our ACMG certified guides have experience and training to manage this risk
    • Radios and/or other communication devices
    • Your guide will be carrying bear spray if an encounter is possible
  • Communication, rescue, and medical treatment
    • Communication can be difficult and in the event of an accident rescue and treatment may not be available
    • Adverse weather may also delay the arrival of treatment or transportation out of the field,
    • Alpine weather conditions can be extreme and change rapidly without warning making travel by helicopter, dangerous
    • If an injury occurs in challenging terrain movement to an evacuation point may be slow

    • Slips trips and falls indoor or outdoor
