Summits, Glaciers, a Remote Hut and an Alpine Guide to Yourselves

Once again our backcountry huts are booked on an exclusive basis only. This is the perfect time to grab your pod and make the most of a remote hut high in the mountain. You will be lead up there by an experienced alpine guide and weather dependent be able to summit Castor Peak and feel humbled by the peaks of the Southern Selkirks.

Located between The Dome and Castor Peaks on the Asulkan ridge, the Sapphire Col Hut gives access to high-quality quartzite mountaineering on the ridges and faces of the the Asulkan Group. Sapphire Col is above the tree line in serious avalanche terrain and requires travel on a crevassed glacier. Getting to the hut requires mountaineering equipment and skills, knowledge of safe glacier travel techniques and whiteout navigation skills. Join this trip and we have just the person to get you there.

Camp Objectives

Visit and enjoy with your own group, the superbly placed Sapphire Col Hut.

Dodge the crevasses and glacier ponds to attain the high col where the hut sits.

Enjoy this very remote hut, the real and pure wilderness and the 360 degree view of the Selkirk Peaks.

Practice your mountaineering skills to try and summit Castor Peak.

Day by Day Adventure Itinerary 

 

  • Day 1: Meet your guide bright and early at the Asulkan Valley Parking lots (more details will be sent out a week before the camp starts). Go over gear and waivers and head on up the Asulkan Valley trail. Pass waterfalls and creeks before arriving to the end of the trail and stepping off into the rocks below the glacier. Reach the Glacier and harness/rope up. The rest of the journey is on ice. Arrive at the hut and relax.
  • Day 2: Wake up early and have an attempt at Castor Peak. Pack up and head back down into civilization.

Moderate

You should have basic glacier travel skills and good baseline fitness. The trip is 5km up and 1200 meters of elevation gain.

Food, Accommodation and Guiding

Food

To keep the cost of this course as low as possible for participants, food will not be provided as part of the course.If you like us to arrange food we can do so for $45/person through the backcountry food provider Peakeats.

Accommodation

Accommodation will be at the Sapphire Col Hut where your only company will be the impressive peaks of the Selkirks.

Guiding

We will provide your group with an ACMG Alpine Guide who knows the area well and cater to your groups needs.

Your Guides

Fred Amyot

Frederick Amyot is an ACMG/IFMGA Mountain Guide. Fred guides year-round in many different countries: France, Iceland, USA, and in Canada (from the West coast to the East); heli-skiing and ski touring in the winter and alpine climbing, hiking and rock climbing in the summer. Fred is part of the team coordinating the Mountaineering courses in the Adventure Studies Department at TRU and developing the mountains courses in the Adventure Certificate at Keilir University in Iceland. Fred is an alumni student from the ADVG program and completed the Bachelor Degree in Tourism Management.
